And just so this isn't a totally useless post, here's some final thoughts on exchanges.
As you may have gleaned from past posts, I don't do so well with deadlines. I'm a control freak, a perfectionist and a procrastinator. I'm incredibly self-critical and am plagued by mountains of doubt.
I also freak out when I'm exhausted, which is very much what I did last night after submitting my fic for the exchange.
Here's what I've learned:
1. Fic exchanges just aren't meant for everyone. Writing fanfic should be a hobby, not a source of great stress.
2. I'm much more critical than my readers. One of my other fest fics from December, wasn't as bad as I thought it was. I was incredibly unhappy with the result, and have since spent some time editing it. Mostly though I was embarrased by how terrible it was. I went through the reviews again this morning, and was surprised at how positive they actually were (even the ones that had a criticism or two).
3. I've made some great friends on lj. Everyone's support (even just one word posts) has been amazing and makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.
4. I can still moodswing with the best of them.
5. When everyone's squeeing over the next big fic exchange I have to chain myself to a tree and not sign up.
That being said, if anyone ever wants help running a fic exchange, I'd love to help out. I think I'd probably be better at helping others have a great experience.
Now that I think of it, how do you head up an exchange? Do the ppl who run them just decide a particular topic would be fun to write? Cause I've had a few ideas over the past few months for things I'd love to organize. Any advice?
