Unexpectedly swamped with work this week, but it's been a good kind of swamped. Behind on flist reading though.
Reason for this post: I had a minor writing epiphany today. I've been struggling with how to end a new short story for about a month now, which doesn't usually happen to me when I'm writing fanfic, and I think it's because I know in fanfic my story will have a happy ending. I'm not sure why I haven't applied that assumption to my original fiction, but I've been so focused this past year on making sure that my endings aren't clichés, that I've been incapable of finishing anything. So, once I got past that, I was able to outline an ending that progresses from the start of the story, rather than worry about whether it's clichéd or not.
(I blame this sudden worry of cliché vs no cliché on a member of my critique group who marked up my last submission with "cliché " and nothing else. I think I gave his opinion too much weight, because he also said he dislikes fantasy. FWIW the other members of the group, esp. those who like and read fantasy, gave me much more helpful concrit).
